From Friday, September 30th to Sunday, October 2nd, the first edition of the Sergio Garcia Junior Championship, a tournament valid for the World Amateur Golf Ranking, was held at the Mediterráneo Golf facilities.
The tournament, which was played under the Stroke Play modality at 54 holes, brought together the best under-18 players in both male and female categories over the course of three days.
In the male classification, Swedish player Nils Svanberg took the victory with rounds of 75-74-74 for a total of 223 strokes, two strokes ahead of his nearest pursuer, fellow Swede Simon Wallen with rounds of 72-77-76 for a total of 225. In third place with rounds of 76-79-73 for a total of 226 strokes was Spanish player Luis de Miñon, and in fourth place with rounds of 75-78-78 for a total of 231 was also a Spanish player, Francisco Gavilán Fernández.
In the female classification, Spanish player Martina López-Lanchares Echezarreta took the victory with rounds of 71-77-76 for a total of 224 strokes, one stroke ahead of her nearest pursuer, Chinese player Xinyi Gu with rounds of 75-75-75 for a total of 225. In third place with rounds of 79-74-74 for a total of 227 strokes was local player Julia Ballester Barrio, and in fourth place with rounds of 73-80-75 for a total of 228 was also a local player, Isabel Mas Pitarch.
The two winners, in addition to the fantastic trophy, will have the opportunity to attend the Sergio & Angela Garcia Foundation Junior Championship in Austin, Texas during March 2023 as player guests.
Additionally, all tournament participants were able to enjoy a clinic on Friday afternoon, given by the winner of the 2017 Masters Tournament and host of the event, Sergio Garcia, where the bravest had the opportunity to challenge him in different strokes at his new and recently inaugurated academy. Sergio, as a good host, was present every day of the tournament following and enjoying the game of the young promises of this sport.
As a grand finale to the tournament and during the trophy presentation, which was presided over by Sergio Garcia, host of the tournament, Mar Garcia, director of Mediterraneo Golf, and Victor Garcia, director of the Sergio Garcia Golf Academy, were joined by the also professional player and young promise Eugenio Lopez Chacarra, who shares a team in the Fireballs along with Sergio Garcia.
